excerpt from "Neck of the Woods
Axel staggered from out of the woods. Lulu sunned herself in a lawn chair. Smoke drifted up from her long cigarette. She tapped the ash into an empty Busch Lite can. A blonde woman sat on a picnic table near her. Condensation beaded her own beer. When she saw Axel approach, the woman wound her gum around her finger, popped it from her mouth, and stuck it to the side of her beer can. She stood with hands on hips. Axel had to shield his eyes from the light that glinted off of her fake gold nails, long enough to be small knives.
Here you come, out of the woods without a proper pair of pants on, blood all over you, and without my livestock. Now what the fuck am I supposed to think happened to my damn goat? she demanded.
Wuh, Axel said. He looked at Lulu, who only raised an imperial eyebrow.
The spirits gone from you now, boy, she said pointedly.
